California Avocado Society - Grower Seminars 2008
"Meeting the Challenges of Avocado Production"

These seminars are presented in conjunction with CAC/University of California Cooperative Extension Service (UCCE) and USDA/Risk Management Agency.

*Research Poster Board Sessions will be held at each venue so growers and researchers can interact on the research topic of the day.

*PCA Credits have been applied for.

*Additional Speakers on current topics may be added by the Farm Advisors.

Avocado Pest Research
Addressing the ever present insect threats to the California industry.  An update on pest research being done by the UCR Entomology Department, and how the researchers are tackling current pest threats and the threat of new introductions. 

“Hand grown in California”
CAC VP Jan DeLyser, will speak on the consumer advertising campaign for California Avocados in 2008.

Planting, Replanting, Varieties and Rootstocks
Industry sponsored research by Dr. Greg Douhan provides productive, disease-resistant rootstocks for the future.  Farm Advisors will share their insights on grove planting and replanting.  Salinity research and salt tolerant rootstocks will be discussed.  Are their any varieties worth consideration beyond “Hass”?

Fine-Tuning Orchard Performance
The proper use and timing of plant growth regulators and fertilizers based on the research of Dr. Carol Lovatt.  Tips and tricks for manipulating tree growth habits and production.

Avocado Eco-physiology and Genetics
Research has provided a better understanding of avocado tree physiology.  Production potential is locked up in the avocado genetics code.  Dr. Guy Witney discusses the importance of research that is unlocking the genetic potential of the avocado; and how a broad understanding of eco-physiology can boost “Hass” production now.

*Since these jointly presented seminars replace the previous one-day CAC Research Symposiums and joint seminars, the topics reflect the researchers’ reports on progress from the prior year (in this case, the 06-07 funded research) and “grower risk management” applicability to the USDA/Risk Management Agency (RMA) Grant.
